A new round of federal recall notices is worth a quick pantry-and-closet check before the weekend. Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency updated several shopper-relevant alerts on August 13 and 14, including a clothing recall, a prepared-food recall tied to possible Salmonella contamination, and seafood products with undeclared allergens. None of these notices should cause panic, but they are exactly the kind of small household checks that can prevent a bigger problem later: look at the product name, size, style number or best-before date, then decide whether to stop using it, return it, or throw it out as directed.

The newest consumer-product notice involves Madewell Double V-Neck Pullover and V-Neck Cardigan women’s sweaters. Health Canada says the affected sweaters were sold in light blue and cream, in sizes XS through L, and carry “Style #NT611” or “Style #NT612” plus “HO24” on the sewn-in side seam label. The issue is flammability: the sweaters do not comply with Canada’s Textile Flammability Regulations, creating a burn hazard. The company reported 11 affected units sold in Canada from December 2024 to October 2025, and no Canadian incidents or injuries as of July 30, 2026. Shoppers are told to stop wearing the sweater and contact Madewell for a refund or equivalent store credit; the recall instructions say consumers will be asked to destroy the sweater by cutting it in half and submit photos and product details.

Grocery shoppers in Ontario should also look carefully at recent prepared dips and ready-to-eat items from Whole Foods Market. The CFIA notice covers a long list of Whole Foods Market guacamoles, pico de gallos, salsas and some prepared foods, including chicken quesadillas and turkey burgers, with best-before dates from 2026 AU 07 to 2026 AU 14. The recall also lists several “None” brand fresh salsa and pico de gallo products with best-before dates from 8/07/2026 to 8/16/2026. The products were distributed online and in Ontario, and the issue is possible Salmonella contamination. The practical move is simple: do not taste-test anything to “see if it is fine.” If the product matches the recall, do not consume, serve, use, sell or distribute it; throw it out or return it where purchased, and clean surfaces or containers it may have touched.

Two allergen recalls are especially important for households with egg, shrimp or shellfish allergies. Aqua Gems brand Tempura Shrimp, 454 g, UPC 8 13983 02039 8, lot 535T/KD. 2025 and best before 2027 AU 09, was recalled because egg is not declared on the label. The CFIA lists distribution in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. Separately, Zhou Hei Ya brand Wide Vermicelli with Sesame Sauce, 248 g, UPC 6 978378 870324, with date codes 2026/03/13 and 2026/10/12, was recalled because it contains shrimp that is not declared on the label. That vermicelli recall applies in Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan, was triggered by a consumer complaint, and the CFIA says there has been one reported reaction associated with consuming the product. If someone in your home has the relevant allergy or sensitivity, do not rely on appearance or past purchases; match the UPC and code, then return or discard the product.

There is also a national dairy-aisle quality recall to note. The Greek Gods brand Naturally Flavoured Honey Greek Style Yogurt in 2 x 650 g packages and Organic Plain Greek Style Yogurt in 2 x 650 g packages were recalled due to mould. The notice is classified as a retail-level notification and lists national distribution, with multiple August and September 2026 best-before dates. This recall is described as microbial contamination related to quality or spoilage rather than a harmful contamination warning, but shoppers still should not use affected products. For families who buy club-pack yogurt or keep extra containers in a downstairs fridge, it is worth checking the UPCs and best-before dates now, before the product gets mixed into smoothies, lunch containers or baking.

A good recall routine takes less than ten minutes. Start with the items most likely to be in use today: fresh dips, prepared foods, seafood appetizers, yogurt and clothing currently in the laundry rotation. Check the exact identifier, not just the brand, because many recalls affect only certain lots, sizes, colours, styles or dates. If an item matches, follow the recall instructions instead of donating it or passing it to a neighbour; Health Canada reminds consumers that recalled products cannot be redistributed, sold or even given away in Canada. If a recalled food may have made someone ill, contact a health professional. If a product caused a safety incident, use the federal reporting forms linked from the recall pages. For future shopping, consider taking a quick photo of high-risk labels when buying imported snacks, seafood, children’s gear or seasonal clothing online, because it makes recall checks much faster later.
